“I
believe that the long-term future of the human race must be in space.”
- Stephen Hawking
In
the near future, it has become clear: for the human race to thrive,
we must find a way to live on other planets. Planets containing water
become obvious targets, and a manned mission to Jupiter’s moon,
Europa, has become inevitable. A new space race has emerged, but who
will be the first nation to colonize another world? Will it even be
a nation? What if a corporation were to set its sights on another
planet?
Dr.
Harrison Beck has designed The Lorelei, a submersible habitat built
to drill beneath ice and deploy into the high-pressure environment
of sub-glacial waters. Unfortunately, Beck’s violent mood swings
and antisocial behavior have alienated him from NASA and the scientific
community, and so, Beck’s
Europa dreams are dashed. That is, until a company called Maitland
Technologies contacts him. They’ve built the Lorelei, and they
want him to lead a manned expedition down to Lake Vostok – a
sub-glacial lake beneath the Russian Vostok station in Antarctica
that has not been touched for over 15 million years.
Test
the Lorelei in Vostok, and Europa is next. Unfortunately, to survive
Vostok the Lorelei’s crew must face one of the last truly uncharted
environments on Earth– and their own reflection staring back
from the abysmal black waters of the mysterious lake.
Vostok
is an original sci-fi thriller that grounds a dark human drama against
the backdrop of scientific discovery, isolation, and the depths of
human madness.
